Computer Learning Skills - How quickly you can pick up new software will affect your value to a potential employer
Your computer learning skills may seem like a bit of a no brainer but it’s an important ability to be able to demonstrate, here’s why:
Recruitment agents don’t know what you do and don’t know. If you don’t state on your resume that you can pick up new packages like a duck to water they’ll pass you by for not knowing ’x’ and ’y’.
It’s very important to portray yourself as being extremely flexible and quick to learn.
To develop your computer learning skills you can download and play around with the different flavours of Linux which are freely available on the Internet.
If you have a spare computer to install it onto great, if not there are several virtual machine programs available which will allow you to emulate another Operating System on a single computer.
It’s safe to assume though that if you can install and configure the more advanced UNIX operating systems such as Open BSD you can call yourself adept at this skill so make that apparent.
Recruitment agencies match up candidates to specific job specs they get from employers. They don't know the differences and simularities between various software packages - for example helpdesk call logging programs (which are all the same, if you've used 1 you've used them all!), so they will bypass you if you don't have what they are looking for.
This is why at this early stage of your career you need to make it very very clear that your computer learning skills are razor sharp
