Employee Resourcefulness - How resourceful am I when it comes to finding solutions to problems I don’t know how to fix?

Having employee resourcefulness, knowing how to search and where to look for answers is somewhat of a fine art. Of course google is the first choice when looking up an error message or an event id but a lot of time can be saved by looking somewhere you know will have the answer.

I have found the most effective method by far is to ask a question in a forum related to the issue I’m searching on. It’s saved me hours of trawling search engine results in the past and is my first stop whenever I need a quick answer to something.

One word of advice when it comes to forums though:

Use the search function before asking the question

More often than not your issue has been covered before and a search of a particular forum will bring you the answer you need. If it doesn’t, go ahead and ask the experts. Look out for FAQ posts pinned at the tops of forums as well before asking a question.

Always be sure to read the forum rules, be polite, use good grammar and spelling, USE PARAGRAPHS (big one!) and state that you’ve done a search already before asking the question.

Some communities that I use to ask questions are (in no particular order):

Experts Exchange
Firewall.cx
Certification forums (UK based)
Certification forums (US based)
Event ID.net

There are other communities out there but the above are ones I am subscribed to. If you have certifications for companies such as Cisco and Microsoft you will have access to resources on their sites.

Software and hardware manufacturer sites have great knowledgebase’s so include them in your search as well.

For the communities and resources that charge a subscription fee such as eventid.net and Microsoft Technet, ask your department manager to buy a subscription that you can all use between you as a team.

Employee resourcefulness is something you will want to highlight as a key strength to perspective employers. No one knows the answer to every technical question/problem there is, but what makes a good technical employee is the ability to know how to find answers quickly.

Even better if you keep notes of them in your notebook!

Which brings me on to my next topic:

Do I work well in a team?
