5 Ways to Save Time and Money When Building Your Homebased Online Business
It’s a great feeling when you’ve made the decision to strike out on your own and build a homebased online business with the intention of becoming free of the daily 9-5 grind.
Fitting it all in around a day job and busy home life means you need to work smart, have a plan and stick to it, set realistic goals, measure your progress and improve.
If you’re not careful you can easily waste a lot of time going round in circles trying to do 8 things at once. Here are some pointers to help you achieve the most with the time you have.
#1 Decide to Focus on a Task in Hand
One of the greatest barriers to building a successful homebased online business is lack of focus due to the amount of distractions available.
When I started out and for about the first 9 months I found it near impossible to systematically work though a single project. I’d sit down to perform a certain task and end up trying to do 5 things at once.
When you commit to do something turn off your email program, RSS readers and anything else that can distract or interrupt you from what you set out to complete.
#2 Don’t Believe the Hype About Urgency
Know from the outset that you will be faced with incredibly tempting too good to be true offers with time sensitive ‘deadlines’ to get you to buy them right now. This is how get rich quick people make their money - they excel at writing sensational sales copy and creating incredible urgency – it’s what they do for a living.
I find that even after unsubscribing from all the email lists for the types of people who send out these offers some of them still manage to get through. If a message tells me to hurry up and act now because ‘offer ends at midnight tonight’ or ‘only x amount left’ or ‘price goes up tomorrow’ I unsubscribe and delete.
The truly great products will still be there tomorrow, next week, next month, next year and in years to come. Anything really worth buying doesn’t need to be sold using such desperate tactics.
If anyone tries to force you into making a purchasing decision as a matter of urgency - whatever they’re selling is not worth your time or money.
#3 Assign a Monetary Value to Your Time
All time spent building your homebased online business is an investment and should be treated as such. At the beginning you will be trading your spare time for future passive income.
Time is precious so make sure every second counts toward building the future you want.
Take your hourly rate from your day job and double it for the spare time you sacrifice to build your homebased online business
#4 Make a Thorough Step-By-Step Business Plan
Groundwork and preparation is everything for building a successful online business. You need to:
Choose the best field for you to go into.
Find out what your target market wants.
Assess the supply and demand.
Find the best ways to meet the demand.
Make a blueprint to work from.
All before you even think about registering a domain name!
If you’re not using a step-by-step system like Site Build It! to build your homebased online business you’ll need to find efficient and cost effective ways to:
Do thorough keyword research
Find high quality and well converting affiliate programs,
Research what people are looking to spend money on
Write your own info product
Create some software that solves a certain problem or automates a certain task
Write effective web content that draws human interest and is optimised for search engines.
Submit your web pages to engines and directories
Find linking partners
Capture leads and build a warm responsive subscriber list
Measure your performance, test, track and improve.
Keep up to date with developments and new technologies.
There are a huge amount of tasks to be done and technology to conquer, don’t try and learn it all at once – be systematic, strategic and don’t rush. It's too easy to get burnt out and waste years worth of time, money and energy figuring all this stuff out and trying to get it right.
Many people give up on building a homebased online business because they think it's either too hard or it doesn't work. If it weren't for Site Build It! I'd probably be one of them - if you're interested in substantially cutting out the learning curve, menial tasks and wrestling with technology I recommend you give it a look - or better still see what what successful SBIer Elad has to say about it in his video below:
Spend time early on developing a plan, thorough groundwork will pay huge dividends. Cut out the learning curve if you can.
#5 Choose a Niche You Enjoy and Know About
Building your homebased online business around a topic you are knowledgeable about and enjoy should go without saying. But many people try and chase the money by getting into mega competitive highly lucrative niches they know nothing about.
If you choose something you know about already and enjoy – or something you’ve very interested in and are prepared to research enough to become an authority on you’ll work a lot smarter and it won’t feel like hard work.
The word authority gets bandied about a lot when it comes to making it online. People talk about the importance of getting linked to from authority sites – I even got an email once trying to sell me a product (with a time sensitive urgency) on *the secrets* of building an authority site.
I don’t know what’s so secret about knowing what you’re talking about and having more than a passing interest in it – not exactly rocket science is it?
*****Sidebar****** Lots of sensational time sensitive ‘make money online’ products like to use ‘secrets’ to try and draw you in. There are no secrets! *****************
Your success is directly related to how much of an authority you are in your field of expertise. Choose a subject you love and it won’t be an uphill struggle.
Conclusion - Time Money and Leverage = Freedom!
Time
Building your homebased online business does require some mental preparation to protect you from wasting time by allowing distractions to pull you from your planned tasks. There is a time to read blogs and websites and emails - and there is a time to work smart on getting your life to where you want it to be. Separate them from each other!
Money
There are some great products out there - the best ones sell themselves, have stood and will continue to stand the test of time while all the "red hot act now!" get rich quicks come and go. If you spend time doing your groundwork you’ll be in a position to shop around for what will grow your business as opposed to what people are trying to sell you.
Leverage
The whole idea of having a homebased online business is to earn more, work less and generate passive income regardless of whether you work, play, sleep or go on holiday. To truly achieve that goal you need to think long term and build a business that will grow and last.
