Outline of a resume – Find your unique qualities and stand out from the crowd.
The outline of a resume differs from country to country, job title to job title and how much experience you have.
It is a good idea to have a few different resumes catered to different types of job role and industries you’re applying for. I have several, all different lengths and targeted toward different types of organizations and job titles.
Outline of a resume – Go the extra mile and differentiate from your competition.
Imagine being a recruitment agent with a pile of resumes all for one position. Lets say that you want to make a shortlist of 10 candidates out of 200 resumes.
What will you look for to help you decide which 10 out of the 200 you will pass on to the next stage?
If I was that agent and was faced with this task I would be looking for the following:
All the information I am looking for easily presented and at the very beginning.
Relevant skills and experience.
Any qualifications that are either part of the job requirement or complement the skills required.
Above are what will make the recruitment agent’s job a lot easier when determining who to put forward for the role or not, your resume has to make that job as easy as possible for them and stand out from the others
Many people have 1 resume that they just send off to every job they apply for, they will apply for 30-40 jobs a day with the same old resume and wonder why they don’t get the response they’re hoping for. They may get 2 or 3 phonecalls a week after applying for hundreds of jobs and get disheartened that they are not seeing the results they should be.
The above approach is wrong because there is no effort being made to really relay the fact that the candidate is very interested in the particular role .Generic resumes do not get anything like the same results as targeted resumes. I know this first hand because I can apply for 4 different jobs a day with tailored resumes and get at least 2, maybe 3 callbacks from the jobs I apply for. The other part of this equation is to be very selective over which jobs you apply for.
The outline of a resume starts with all the most powerful selling points straight off the bat. The first half of your first page should tell the agent exactly why you are the person for this job. A brief paragraph - commonly referred to as an objective - introducing your skillset and experience should be followed by a bulleted list or table of technical expertise points.
Some will say that an objective is no longer needed, I disagree - for entry level computer jobs you need to stand out from the rest, you can read more about objectives and see some resume objective examples here:
You don’t have a lot of space to get your point across and the agents don’t have time to sift through trying to find what they’re looking for. Save your education, hobbies and interests for the tail end, concentrate your opening ˝ a page on presenting the exact information the agents are looking for.
I order my resumes in this order:
Opening Paragraph
Bulleted list or table of relevant skills
Employment History
Everything else
Make it so that they can see what they need at a glance, no long clunky paragraphs, put the most important words in bold and use bulleted lists and tables.
Consider the agent sitting with a huge pile of resumes and make their job of selecting yours over the others as easy as possible!
Outline of a resume – Conclusion
The outline of a resume that results in a callback and/or bags you an interview depends on how much you are prepared to put into it. You must consider the agents who will cherry pick the best of a big pile. To do this you must cherry pick which jobs you apply for and tailor your resume to target those jobs. Think about the job title, think about the type of company and find the ones that really excite you.
Yes it involves more work but going the extra mile differentiates you from your competition. Many people think that the cover letter is where you should target the individual positions, while this is true a targeted cover letter and a targeted resume will do better than a targeted cover note and a generic resume.
